Construction site deliveries: a practical transport guide
Measure the whole load, clarify the site access and establish who handles the equipment. These checks help contractors request a realistic van-and-crew quotation without guesswork.
Planning a construction site delivery
The first decision is not the postcode; it is whether the load can travel safely in the proposed van. List what the contractor needs at site, where it is waiting, its actual packed size and weight, and any limits at either entrance. 'Some fencing and site kit' is a starting description, not a load specification.
Sandy Movers arranges planned van transport for suitable contractor equipment, builders-merchant orders, site office furniture and supplies. Tell us if the date is fixed or urgent. We review the proposed vehicle, loading assistance and access before agreeing a quote, rather than pretending every site job is suitable for instant dispatch.
Construction courier, merchant delivery or heavy plant haulage?
A construction courier collects goods from a supplier, yard or another site. A builders merchant may offer its own delivery; using a separate van can make sense when the order is ready but the contractor needs a particular route or receiving address. Heavy plant haulage, crane lifts and HIAB work require different equipment and are outside this van service.
Luton van dimensions and the 1,000 kg payload
For the suitable Sandy Movers vehicle, the stated maximum carrying payload is around 1,000 kg. That is a planning ceiling, not a promise that every 1,000 kg consignment will be accepted. Driver and passengers, fuel, vehicle fittings, axle weights and the exact assigned vehicle affect what can legally be loaded. The vehicle's plated weights and the actual consignment take priority over a website figure. GOV.UK explains van weight limits.
Think in terms of a load area of approximately 4 metres in length and 1.8 metres in width, subject to the actual van's floor space, door aperture, protrusions and securing arrangements. A nominal 3-metre vehicle height is not a 3-metre internal cargo height: do not assume an upright 3-metre object fits inside a closed Luton. Send the object's length, width, height, photographs and whether it can safely travel flat, tilted or dismantled. We check the real clearances before accepting it.
Oddly shaped items can fit better—or worse—than a simple measurement suggests
A narrow long item might fit diagonally or at a suitable angle, while a smaller but rigid box can be impossible to manoeuvre through the rear door. Frames, handles, feet, projections, fragile glazing and the route through the vehicle matter as much as maximum dimensions. We do not guarantee a fit from one measurement alone.
Payload and available space are separate tests. Twenty 25 kg fencing feet are already 500 kg, before counting panels, clips, tools or the crew. Weight must also be spread and restrained safely; room remaining in the van does not justify overloading it.
Fencing, barriers, cones and site equipment: what to declare
Model-specific measurements help. The manufacturer lists a Heras M350 temporary fencing panel at 3,500 mm by 2,000 mm and around 10 kg. That does not prove every panel—or any stacked quantity—will pass through the particular van's aperture. Panel feet, connectors and stillages may be more limiting than the mesh.
| Equipment | Information needed before quoting |
|---|
| Heras or other temporary fencing | Panel count, exact length/height, number and weight of feet, clips, braces and racks |
|---|
| Pedestrian barriers and traffic cones | Model, number, stacking arrangement, ballast and loose accessories |
|---|
| Site furniture and lockers | Assembled dimensions, contents, removable parts, access through doors and lifts |
|---|
| Tool cabinets and storage boxes | Loaded weight, wheels/handles, contents, available loading equipment |
|---|
| Palletised materials, plasterboard, doors and fit-out panels | Packed width, length, gross weight, fragile finishes, support/orientation and merchant handling |
|---|
| PPE, signage, equipment cases | Contents, counts, batteries, chemical or pressurised items and special declarations |
|---|
For example, the Armorgard TuffBank TB2 is listed at about 80 kg before tools are placed inside. A small-looking box can become the heaviest part of a collection. Please give packed or loaded weight instead of assuming the listed empty product weight applies.
What about extinguishers, batteries and chemicals?
Tell us before booking. Classification, quantity, packaging and carriage requirements matter even where a specialist driver certificate is not required. We do not provide a blanket promise to carry fuels, gas, solvents, pressurised equipment, unidentified tanks or other dangerous goods. These need appropriate assessment and may be refused or require another carrier.
Builders merchant and supplier collections
Send the correct trade counter or warehouse branch, paid order/reference, authorised collector details, readiness time and how the goods will be presented. A collection may be boxes, loose lengths, framed panels or a forklift-loaded pallet; each requires a different loading plan.
Confirm whether merchant staff can load the assigned vehicle and whether the site has unloading equipment. If the goods are not released, the load changes or the order is delayed, notify us before the agreed collection. Waiting, return visits and extra trips are subject to a revised scope and quotation.
Collecting from several merchants? Add each one as a stop in the enquiry form. For mixed collections and drops, see commercial multi-stop transport.
Timed site deliveries and access: what we can plan
We can plan around agreed delivery windows when the route, vehicle and site arrangements make them achievable. Give the exact required date and explain whether the time is a gate arrival, unloading slot or completed-delivery deadline. We will check the request before confirming availability; we do not promise that traffic, supplier delays or site access can never disrupt an ETA.
- Provide the actual goods-in gate, postcode and site contact rather than relying only on the main site address.
- Confirm height restrictions, parking, loading bays, security check-in, permitted vehicle types and unloading distance.
- List PPE, site induction and access documents required from the visiting crew; never assume certifications are already held.
- Agree who loads at the supplier and who receives or carries the goods at the destination.
- Flag roadworks, red routes or restricted delivery periods in London in advance.
If the deadline is critical, tell us that when requesting the quote. Confirm who will approve a revised time if something beyond the route plan changes. HSE's site delivery cooperation guidance explains why suppliers, hauliers and receiving sites need to coordinate.
Driver-only, driver assistance or a moving crew?
Choose driver only when your own people are responsible for loading and unloading. Driver assistance, a two-person crew or a three-person crew can be requested when carrying help is required; we will assess safe handling and confirm which option is suitable. You can also select 'Let Sandy Movers recommend'.
Tell us about stairs, travel distance from van to storage area, awkward shapes, mechanical lifting equipment and whether anyone can help at each stop. More people do not substitute for a forklift, a crane, a suitable tail lift or a safe manual-handling assessment. HSE manual-handling guidance is a useful reference.
What affects the quote and what happens next?
The final price depends on collection and delivery addresses, load and weight, crew, route distance, loading and unloading time, access and any fixed windows. Parking, waiting, added stops and second trips can change the scope. All prices are reviewed individually; there is no automatic online commercial price.
Provide your declared goods value and check our insurance information for applicable cover and exclusions. A Goods in Transit policy and Public Liability policy protect different risks; neither is unlimited or automatically suitable for every category of item.
Our anonymised contractor case study documents a real 4 November 2026 job involving fencing, site furniture and a two-stage collection route. For relocation of reusable kit between projects, see site-to-site equipment transfers.
Ready to discuss your load? Use the commercial transport enquiry form at the top: add your stops, notes, timing, items, dimensions, crew preference, work email and phone. Sandy Movers will review and respond with a personalised quote before any booking is agreed.
