Fixed-Price vs Hourly Removals: Which Should You Book?
Choose a fixed price when the inventory and access are clear and you want cost certainty. Hourly can suit short local jobs, uncertain access or commercial work that may change. Sandy Movers offers both and can arrange a home visit when the size or access makes an estimate hard to judge.

Key takeaways
- Compare the same crew, van and services. Ask where hourly time starts and stops and what the minimum is.
- A fixed quote covers the agreed job. Confirm what happens if the inventory, parking or delivery date changes.
- A short drive can still take hours to load and unload. Confirm the floors and carrying distance at both ends.
When a fixed quote is worth it
A fixed quote is a good fit when you know what is going, what access is available and which extras you need. It works especially well for a larger household move after a visit, where the team can check awkward furniture, both floors, lift limits and vehicle access. Agree the inventory and packing requirements first so you can budget around a known price.
A fixed quote is less flexible when the move changes. An extra collection, a garage full of items added late or a missed loading slot can change the scope. Ask how changes are approved and what happens if completion runs late.
When hourly is the better fit
Hourly can suit a small, short-distance job where you want the crew for the time it actually takes. It can also work for phased office moves, uncertain access or jobs where the furniture or equipment list develops as you go. Agree the minimum booking, who signs off extra time and what the rate covers.
Ask whether the clock runs during loading, travel, unloading and waiting, and how part hours are charged. If the lift breaks or the loading point moves, ask the team to explain the time impact before you decide how to proceed.
A worked comparison with the same scope
Suppose the same crew, van, inventory and access are quoted at £450 fixed or £95 per hour with a four-hour minimum. The table assumes straight time billing and no separate parking, packing or waiting fees. These are example prices, not a current offer.
- The mathematical break-even point is about 4 hours 44 minutes. Billing increments can change the actual crossover.
- If a reliable survey puts the job near five hours, the fixed price removes some budget uncertainty.
- If a small load can be done inside the minimum, the hourly quote may work out cheaper.
| Chargeable time | Hourly | Fixed |
|---|---|---|
| 3.5 hours | £380 minimum | £450 |
| 4 hours | £380 | £450 |
| 5 hours | £475 | £450 |
| 6 hours | £570 | £450 |
When a lower hourly rate costs more
Compare £90 an hour for a two-person crew expected to take six hours with £125 an hour for a three-person crew expected to take four. That is £540 versus £500 before parking or extras. The larger crew is £40 cheaper in this example. Check that the larger crew can actually work in parallel. One narrow staircase or a single small lift can limit that advantage.
Ask for a realistic range, with the reason it might go long. For an hourly office move, agree which rooms or equipment come first and a point at which the crew checks in before adding time. For a fixed-price house move, agree which inventory and access assumptions the quote depends on.
A fixed quote, an hourly rate or a split price?
| Move | Best quote to ask for | Check before booking |
|---|---|---|
| Large house, settled list and access | Fixed after a survey | Confirm packing, dismantling, parking, trips and waiting exceptions. |
| Small local flat move | Hourly with minimum and an estimate range | Check where the clock starts, the smallest billing increment and whether the crew needs a second trip. |
| Keys may be delayed | Fixed move with a separate written waiting schedule | Confirm when the allowance starts, the rate, whether it is per vehicle and the fallback if you cannot unload. |
| Phased commercial move | Hourly or fixed by clearly defined phase | Name who can extend the job, sign off extra time or change the order of work. |
The access question that can change the quote
A Northwood to Ruislip booking was priced hourly with a four-hour minimum because the two-person crew had stairs at both ends and no lifts. A separate Kew to Richmond move was quoted fixed after the scope was reviewed. The route was about 1.1 miles, but the collection was from a third-floor flat. These are different jobs, so compare the pricing models within each scope.
What if you still aren’t sure?
Get an estimate, then message the Sandy Movers team with your inventory, access and preferred date. Tell us which details are still uncertain. We can explain whether hourly or a fixed quote suits the job and whether a home visit would help.
Can movers charge more on a fixed quote?
The written quote governs the agreed work. Extra furniture, a second stop or a delayed delivery can be outside that scope. Ask which changes can alter the total, who authorises them and how the extra cost is calculated.
Does an hourly mover charge for travel or waiting?
It depends on when the company starts and stops its clock and any separate travel charge. Ask what happens when the crew arrives early, gets stuck in traffic between addresses or waits for keys.
Can I get both quotes from Sandy Movers?
Yes. Tell us the inventory, route and what is uncertain. We can discuss hourly and fixed options for the same move and arrange a visit where that would help.
