Moving Volume Calculator UK: Furniture, Boxes, Van Size & Storage

Calculate cubic metres and cubic feet, compare realistic house-move scenarios and understand what should fit in a Luton van.

How the furniture and removals volume calculator works

This free moving volume calculator totals the current planning volume assigned to each selected item, multiplies it by the quantity and applies the tool's loading allowance. Cubic volume is length × width × height. An item measuring 2.0m × 0.9m × 0.75m occupies a 1.35m³ rectangular envelope, and 1m³ equals 35.3147ft³. The answer is an inventory-based estimate, not a physical loading plan or confirmed removal price.

Because the same editable inventory covers furniture, appliances, boxes and bags, it also works as a furniture volume calculator, moving inventory calculator and van-load planning tool without asking you to complete separate forms.

    Length × width × height = m³
    1m³ = 35.3147ft³

Box volume and remaining Luton space

The current calculator assigns 0.05m³ to a small box, 0.08m³ to a medium box and 0.11m³ to a large box. In box-only mode it adds a 3% loading allowance. The examples below show the effective volume used, so they can be combined with the furniture inventory rather than treated as universal van limits.

    Box planning exampleEffective box-only volume
    40–50 large boxes4.5–5.7m³
    60–80 medium boxes4.9–6.6m³
    120–140 small boxes6.2–7.2m³

If the van carried boxes only, an 18m³ planning load is approximately 340 small, 210 medium or 150 large boxes by volume. That is not a safe booking promise: books and other dense contents can reach payload limits before the load space is full, while weak, fragile or irregular cartons cannot always be stacked to the roof.

    Current property-preset planning examples

These figures are calculated from the editable inventories currently pre-filled by the tool, including its 10% full-property loading allowance. They are not national averages or fixed quotes. The preset must be changed to match the furniture, appliances, loft, garage, shed, balcony, garden, boxes and bags actually moving.

Worked example: can a lighter three-bedroom house fit one Luton?

Yes, by volume, when the inventory is genuinely lighter. Using the calculator's current item values, 30 medium boxes, one three-seat sofa, one double bed, two single beds, two medium chests, one three-door wardrobe, one two-door wardrobe, a six-seat dining table and chairs, a washing machine, fridge freezer and large TV total about 14.9m³ before allowance and 16.4m³ after the 10% full-move allowance. That sits within the calculator's 18m³ normal one-Luton threshold. Its fuller default three-bedroom preset is 27.2m³ and therefore needs more than one Luton load.

Van size, usable dimensions and legal payload

Cubic metres do not guarantee that a load fits safely. A long sofa may exceed usable load length, a wardrobe may not pass through the rear door and mirrors or fragile furniture need protected gaps. Dense books, tools, stone, gym equipment and machinery can exhaust payload before volume. GOV.UK states that a van's loaded weight includes the van, driver, passengers, fuel and load. Check the official van weight and loading guidance.

    Storage-space, partial-load and furniture planning

Use the calculated m³ as a storage inventory guide, not a direct square-foot unit size. Self-storage is commonly sold by floor area, so the required unit also depends on ceiling height, door dimensions, aisle access and safe stacking. For a partial move, student move, single-item delivery or office move, start from zero and add only what will travel. Sandy Movers moves goods into and out of storage units but does not claim to rent the unit itself.

Improve the estimate before requesting a quote

Count every small, medium, large and wardrobe box.
Add suitcases, bags, loose items and packing materials.
Include loft, garage, shed, garden and balcony contents.
Measure oversized furniture at its longest, widest and highest points.
Identify heavy items and furniture that cannot be dismantled.
Send both postcodes, floors, lifts, parking and long-carry details.

Moving volume, van size and Luton capacity FAQs

A moving volume calculator estimates the cubic space occupied by the furniture, appliances, boxes and bags you list. It is a planning estimate, not a physical loading plan or confirmed removal quote.

No. The result is a free volume estimate; Sandy Movers must still confirm the inventory, addresses, access, date, team and vehicle before giving a booking price.

It is only as accurate as the inventory and item assumptions entered. Missing loft, garage or garden items, unusual dimensions and poor packing can make the real load larger than the estimate.

CBM means cubic metres (m³), the three-dimensional space occupied by a load. One cubic metre is a block measuring 1m × 1m × 1m, and this calculator converts the inventory total into both m³ and ft³.

Multiply cubic metres by 35.3147 to estimate cubic feet, or multiply an item's length, width and height when all three measurements are in feet. This calculator performs the m³ and ft³ conversion automatically.

The calculator’s current editable presets estimate about 12.1m³ for a one-bedroom flat, 17.8m³ for a two-bedroom flat and 27.2m³ for a fuller three-bedroom house after the full-move allowance. These are worked starting inventories, not UK averages: remove or add items until the preset matches the actual home.

Choose the van from the completed inventory, usable loading dimensions and legal payload, not bedroom count alone. Cubic metres describe space, but door openings, item shape, dismantling, fragile-item protection and loading efficiency determine whether the load fits safely.

Yes, a lighter three-bedroom inventory can fit one Luton by volume, but the calculator’s fuller default three-bedroom preset does not. A worked lighter example with 30 medium boxes, three beds, two wardrobes, two chests, a three-seat sofa, dining set, washing machine, fridge freezer and TV totals about 16.4m³ after allowance; the default fuller preset totals about 27.2m³. Payload, exact dimensions and safe loading still require review.

Using the calculator’s current definitions and its 3% box-only allowance, an 18m³ planning load is roughly 340 small boxes, 210 medium boxes or 150 large boxes by volume alone. With household furniture sharing the van, 40–50 large boxes use about 4.5–5.7m³, 60–80 medium boxes use about 4.9–6.6m³ and 120–140 small boxes use about 6.2–7.2m³. Real capacity can be lower because of payload, protection and unusable gaps.

Yes, the calculator’s current two-bedroom starting inventory is approximately 17.8m³ after allowance, which falls inside its normal one-Luton threshold of 18m³. It includes 35 medium boxes, 15 large boxes, beds, wardrobes, seating, appliances and dining furniture; extra loft, balcony, garage or bulky items can push it over the threshold.

The calculator’s current five-bedroom starting inventory is approximately 50.2m³ after allowance, so it is a multi-load or larger-vehicle move rather than a one-Luton job. The preset includes 90 medium boxes, 35 large boxes, eight wardrobe boxes and a fuller furniture inventory; Sandy Movers must confirm the final combination of vehicles, trips and crew.

Yes. A load can fit by volume but still exceed the vehicle's legal payload, especially with books, machinery, gym equipment, stone, tools or dense business stock.

Measure the item at its longest, widest and highest points and tell Sandy Movers if it cannot be dismantled. Photos and exact dimensions are more reliable than treating an unusual item as standard furniture.

Use the result as a starting volume, then check the storage provider's internal floor area, ceiling height, door size and stacking rules. Cubic metres cannot be converted into square feet without those details.

Yes. Include every packed box, suitcase, bag, appliance, loose item, garage item and garden item that will travel; omitted small items can add up to substantial space.

Often. Flat sections from beds, tables and suitable wardrobes can pack more efficiently, but mattresses, sofas, appliances and solid furniture usually retain most of their volume.

Ask Sandy Movers to review the inventory before booking. Near-capacity loads are most sensitive to item shape, loading order, fragile-item protection, dismantling and payload.

Yes. Start with an empty inventory and add only the items being moved, whether that is one room, selected furniture, business equipment, boxes or a full property.

Yes. After entering your items, use the print option to produce a concise inventory and volume estimate that you can review or share when requesting a quote.

The volume calculator estimates the space occupied by your inventory, while the Moving Cost Calculator estimates an indicative Sandy Movers price using the journey, access, inventory and services. Neither result is a confirmed booking quote until the move has been reviewed.
